Exposing Atlantic Salmon Post-Smolts to Fluctuating Sublethal Nitrite Concentrations in a Commercial Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) May Have Negative Consequences

چکیده
Salmon farmers are interested in extending the time post-smolts reared recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). However, there is a lack of knowledge regarding optimal water quality for RAS, and potential consequences long term exposure to different toxic compounds, such as nitrite, RAS water. To address this issue, we conducted case study at Faroese Atlantic salmon farm, that rears large fresh 22 months before sea transfer, with no additional chloride salt, known treatment nitrite toxicity. The aim was document effects long-term fluctuating sub-lethal concentrations on blood physiology post-smolts. over six weeks, end production cycle. Our shows after ~22 chloride, fish had accumulated plasma concentration 8 16 times higher than ambient results indicate accumulation may have resulted extracellular hyperkaliemia, since positive correlation between potassium levels (p=0.00095), almost twice high previously reported salmon. This could health challenged due prolonged RAS. Further research related needed asses negative impact, order optimize welfare growth performance during

Salmonid alphavirus infection causes skin dysbiosis in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) post-smolts
Interactions among host, microbiota and viral pathogens are complex and poorly understood. The goal of the present study is to assess the changes in the skin microbial community of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) in response to experimental infection with salmonid alphavirus (SAV). The salmon skin microbial community was determined using 16S rDNA pyrosequencing in five different experimental g...

The effect of episodic acidification on Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) smolt physiology and survival in fresh water (FW) and seawater (SW) was investigated. Smolts were held in either ambient (control, pH 6.0–6.6), acidified (chronic, pH 4.4–6.1), or episodically acidified (episodic, pH reduction from control levels to pH 5.2 for 48 h once weekly) river water for 31 days and then transferred to ...
متن کاملBiological phosphate removal in a prototype recirculating aquaculture treatment system
Efforts to reduce phosphorus concentrations in aquaculture systems have mainly dealt with improving the bioavailability of phosphorus in fish feed. Once released into the culture water, phosphorus is generally left untreated and discharged with the effluent water. In the present study, results are presented on a prototype recirculating treatment system originally designed for removal of organic...
متن کاملDietary Chlosterol Requirement of Juvenile Narrow-clawed Crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus) in a Recirculating Aquaculture System
Dietary cholesterol has been shown to be essential for several crustacean species. However, cholesterol requirement of narrow-clawed crayfish has not been reported. Therefore, a 12-week feeding trial was conducted to determine deitary cholesterol requirement of narrow-clawed crayfish. Juvenile crayfish with an average body weight of 13.8±1 g mean weight were intensively stocked in an indoor rec...
